Point In Canon: Crooked Kingdom, after getting beaten up, before confronting his father

Personality: Wylan van Eck is a genius in many ways. He's brilliant with numbers and equations. Can make things go boom in a pretty impressive way. And he makes beautiful music. But the one thing he cannot do is the one thing his father wants from him: he cannot read. Numbers and musical notes on a page he can read easily, but words spin and change places as if by magic.
When his mother was alive, he had someone who loved him despite that flaw. But after her death - her 'death' - he was left with a father who tried everything to fix his son. But nothing he did worked and that feeling of defeat and self-blame seeped its way into how Wylan viewed the world. It also combined with his two abilities to see people as they were - he knew his father would have no qualms about trying to kill him a second time - and wanting to believe the best in them. Even after his father had tried to kill him, twice, he still blamed himself.
But slowly, the more he worked with Kaz and the Crows and the more he became one of them instead of just a hostage that was working with them, the more his self-confidence began to bloom. Instead of blushing every time he talked to Jesper, he began to test the waters to see if he was teasing or really interested. He did things like change his face in order to both prove a point and find out what his father really felt about him.
But it wasn't until he learned his mother's true fate - the fact that she was alive - that he really came into his own and stopped living in the shadow of his father's censure. Wylan could forgive a lot of things, he could blame himself for a lot of things, but he'd always thought his father had loved his mother. So maybe he couldn't really see people as they were but only as he thought they should - or could - be.
Abilities/Powers/Strengths: No supernatural powers, but an affinity for numbers and music. He also has something like an eidetic memory, although he remembers what he hears when he puts an effort to it rather than what he reads.
